US lawmakers agree to widen sanctions against Nord Stream 2

The annual US defense policy bill 2021 unveiled by lawmakers expands sanctions on companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Under the draft of the annual US defense policy legislation, the sanctions target any companies and individuals providing help to the project, including ships that help operations to lay pipelines, insurance, testing, inspection, and certification services.

The bill is expected to be passed by the US House of Representatives early next week and after by the Senate. 

The project is aimed at bypassing Ukraine and depriving it of transit fees, in a yet another move in the decades-long economic war against the country.
