Ukraine Peace Talks Get Help From putin. Crazy, right?

russia is letting Zelensky lay out “red lines” to convince voters he can compromise without capitulating, writes Leonid Bershidsky for Bloomberg from moscow. No, he is not actually living in moscow right now, he was just born there, ok born and educated, ok born and educated and started his career. Don’t bother.

So, yes, let’s talk about his piece about Ukraine. According to Bershidsky, russia [the state which is waging an unlawful open war against Ukraine from 2014] is trying to help the president of Ukraine to convince Ukrainian citizen to accept russian “peace plan” without capitulating. And I am not even talking about the laughably inadequate title, where putin is just some random witness and a peacemaker. Well, he starts very convincingly, give us more.

And goodies come, you don’t even have to wait for them. “Unlike in the last three years or so, both sides actually want to end the conflict, and share the goal of having the Kyiv government re-establish sovereignty over the regions in eastern Ukraine now held by pro-moscow separatists,” cites Bershidsky almost everything from the russian propaganda book just in the second paragraph. Does russia suddenly want to end “the conflict”? Why would russia want to stop “the conflict” it had started? Wants to help Kyiv re-establish sovereignty over the regions in eastern Ukraine that was snatched by moscow apparently. Oh, wait, those regions now held by “pro-moscow separatists,” as Bershidsky claims. Except there is no pro-moscow separatists in Ukraine that would be able to hold anything and everybody knows that. Every country in the world knows that, but an “opinion piece” excuse allows Bloomberg to let Bershidsky write whatever he wants.

“Zelenskiy, predictably, got into trouble at home after Ukraine accepted a key russian demand,” writes Bershidsky. Yes, Zelensky, his surname is still different from what Bershidsky is trying to push, got in trouble, and yes, predictably, but Ukraine didn’t accept anything, and especially russian demands, that is why he got into trouble with Ukrainians in the first place. The reality seems to avoid Bershidsky, and he likes it too.

“Zelenskiy could have ignored protests in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. … his desire for peace in the east remains overwhelmingly popular,” lies Bershidsky further. Because “desire for peace in the east” has nothing to do with capitulating. And how “overwhelmingly popular” his desire is – was clearly demonstrated during the numerous protests across the country against this so-called Steinmeier plan. And nobody has ever heard about the demonstrations to support this kremlin’s formula, so Bershidsky is just repeating the russian lies, again.

“But Zelenskiy is working to make the pullback happen, and eventually it will”, assures Bershidsky. The only question here is, why is he so certain?

“The complex maneuvering makes any kind of quick deal unlikely. But with both sides seeking closure, there’s still some reason for optimism,” writes Bershidsky. Both sides seeking closure? When was putin seeking closure, ever? Bershidsky is not even trying to look like anything more than another putinversteher.
