Ukraine’s biomethane sector has expanded with the launch of its largest plant to date. A new facility owned by the Teofipol Energy Company is now operational, reports expro.com.ua, citing Georgy Geletukha, chairman of the board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine.
With this launch, the number of biomethane producers in the country has risen to six, and the total installed capacity has reached 106 million cubic meters per year. The new plant’s design capacity is approximately 56 million cubic meters of biomethane annually.
Despite these recent additions, overall production volumes remain insignificant. The sector’s total capacity is about 0.1 billion cubic meters per year, while domestic natural gas consumption in Ukraine is estimated at 20 billion cubic meters per year.
Before the full-scale war, Ukraine planned to boost biomethane production to 20 billion cubic meters by 2050. Achieving this goal would theoretically allow the country to fully replace its current natural gas consumption. According to UABio estimates, this would require the construction of approximately 4,000 biomethane plants.
As reported, in 2025, Ukrainian private companies exported over 11.2 million cubic meters of domestically produced gaseous biomethane.
