The Czech Republic should push within the European Union to start accession negotiations with Ukraine already this year, which is what Kyiv is striving for, Czech President Petr Pavel was cited as saying by ceskenoviny.cz.
“The wider the zone of stability to the east of our borders, the safer we will be here,” Pavel told journalists. According to him, Ukraine’s early membership in the union is in the Czech interest, and the Czech Republic should press for “access negotiations with Ukraine to really start before the end of this year”.
At the same time, he criticized the unilateral blockades of the import of Ukrainian grain, which were introduced by Poland, Slovakia and other countries due to problems with the sale of their own production. The EU could, for example, introduce temporary tariffs instead, the president added.
