United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk called on russia and Ukraine (sic) to take “immediate steps to de-escalate” the war.

“Alarming escalation of hostilities, dozens of civilians killed in #Ukraine & #russia,” Turk wrote.

Turk also said that he “urges immediate steps to de-escalate, ensure protection of civilians & respect int’l law.”

In November 2023, according to very modest estimates of the UN itself, at least 10,000 Ukrainian civilians, including more than 560 children, have been killed and over 18,500 have been injured since russia launched its full-scale invasion. But even the UN admits that “the actual figure may be significantly higher, given the challenges and time required for verification.”
