Turkey said it would not allow two minehunter ships donated to Ukraine by the UK to enter the Black Sea.

“Türkiye immediately classified russia’s special military operation against Ukraine as ‘war’ and, in accordance with Article 19 of the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, closed the Straits to warships of the belligerent parties (russia and Ukraine),” Turkish Directorate of Communications Center for Countering Disinformation said in a statement.

Turkey, which cites the implementation of the Montreux Convention, also said that it determined to “prevent the escalation of tension in the Black Sea.”

* Whether a minehunter ship, a small naval vessel that seeks, detects, and destroys individual naval mines, can be considered a warship is one thing, but it is also important to mention that according to this same document, “vessels of war belonging to belligerent Powers” shall not pass through the straits except in “cases of assistance rendered to a State victim of aggression in virtue of a treaty of mutual assistance binding Turkey.”
