Ukrainian armed forces pushed russian militaries from Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island.

The russian forces left after the Ukrainian army bombarded the island overnight with artillery.

“Unable to withstand the fire of our artillery, missile, and air strikes, the occupiers left Snake Island,” Valery Zaluzhny, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, said.

Zmiinyi is a strategic outpost off the southern coast of Ukraine near the city of Odesa. Snake Island was occupied by russia in late February in a battle that became widely known when Ukrainian soldiers refused to surrender despite calls from the russian warship to put down their arms.

“In russia, they talk about the alleged withdrawal of troops from Snake Island and present it as a ‘goodwill gesture.’ It’s the same as russia claiming they do not interfere with humanitarian corridors for Ukrainian grain exports. But all this is a total fake. First, it was the Ukrainian Armed Forces that drove the russians out of Snake Island, ” the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, said in a statement.
