russians who have been living in the EU for many years help the russian Federation to obtain sanctioned technologies. Natalia Nestor, Deputy Director of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise (KSRIFE) of the Ministry of Justice, said this in an exclusive commentary to ukrinform.ua.
“It is worth noting that russians, who have been living in the EU for many years, also help the russian Federation to obtain prohibited technologies. As a rule, russians [who have managers/supervisors in russia], who already have citizenship of one or another country, open enterprises, institutions, organizations on the territory of the EU for import, export and sale of relevant components. Shipping may take place through a third country [indirect deliveries], and it should also not be forgotten that some components have a dual purpose and can be used both in weapons and in everyday life. Electronic components that should improve people’s lives are being turned by the russians into means of killing Ukrainians,” she said.Nestor also expressed the opinion that the key factor in the success of sanctions against russia is the duration of their application, “the unity of the initiator states and the constant monitoring of the effectiveness of the restrictive measures that have already been applied. There should be unprecedented sanction pressure from world democracies on russia. Sanctions must be constantly monitored and the possibility of their circumvention should be limited as much as possible.”
“Back in the days of the Roman Empire, there was a saying that ‘money does not stink,’ but the money earned by companies that supply parts to russia stinks of death … and this must always be reminded. Personally, at meetings with foreign partners, I always invite them to come to Ukraine and see what is happening here,” Nestor emphasized.
According to her, in June of 2024, the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, together with representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Netherlands, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and together with the sanction coordinator of the President’s Office, held various events in The Hague and demonstrated the components of non-russian origin found in the weapons of the russian Federation .
“Diplomats and other authorized persons from different countries of the world, Dutch parliamentarians, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands took part in the event. This is the first time such an exposition of such components has been held in Europe. Foreign-sourced components found in the missiles, Shahed drones, which russia uses to bomb Ukraine every day, were demonstrated, including intact UAVs, engines and microchips. A functioning diagram of Shahed’s work was demonstrated, even its sound, the sound of approaching death that we hear every day, was played,” she said.
Nestor added that the main goal of the event “was to demonstrate the reality of what is happening in Ukraine, not from newspapers and news outlets … The opportunity was given to see this war, touch it and understand how difficult it is for Ukrainians. We showed the constituent elements of weapons of foreign origin, including those of Dutch manufacturers.”
