As part of a prisoner exchange with russia and Belarus, Poland released a russian archaeologist, Alexander Butyagin, whom Ukraine had sought to extradite over illegal excavations in occupied Crimea.
According to Rzeczpospolita, this was announced by Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski. He stated that Butyagin was in the process of being extradited to Ukraine, but was placed on the exchange list.“One of the people we exchanged was a russian historian who was being sent to Ukraine at the time,” Sikorski noted.
Previously, the Warsaw District Court has approved the extradition of russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin to Ukraine. Ukrainian investigators suspect him of partially destroying a cultural heritage site while conducting illegal excavations in russian-occupied Crimea.
