From now on, the Associated Press will write the name of the Ukrainian capital as Kyiv instead of Kiev. This was reported by the AP Stylebook account on Twitter.

“The AP changed the spelling of the capital of Ukraine to Kyiv in line with the English-language transliteration, which the Ukrainian authorities prefer, and due to the increasing number of uses,” the letter said.

It is also noted that the transliteration in the previous materials will not be corrected.

The issue of using Ukrainian-based place names in the English-language media is part of a wider #KyivNotKiev campaign to assert an independent Ukrainian identity and shake off lingering imperial associations with russia.
