On this day in 1844, Illya Ripyn was born in Chuhuiv, in Kharkiv region of Ukraine. The painter created many works inspired by Ukrainian history and culture, supported Ukrainian artists, and remained deeply connected to Ukraine throughout his life.
His work helped preserve and share the story of Ukrainian history and culture – in particular, the spirit of the Cossacks – with the world.
