The Paralympians of Ukraine finished 5th in the overall medal count in Tokyo with 98 medals, despite having a much smaller delegation than the top four countries, writes nytimes.com.

China, Britain, the US and russia — had more than 220 athletes in Tokyo, while Ukraine brought only 139. According to the International Paralympic Committee’s lead spokesman Craig Spence, Ukraine is “clearly punching above its weight.”

This athletic success has been uninterrupted in recent years, despite russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, which cut Ukraine’s Paralympians off from their high-performance training center on the Black Sea.
