Ukraine expects reformatting of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has demonstrated its inefficiency in the context of the war in Ukraine, and does not exclude the possibility of creating an alternative organization, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets said in a statement.

“We, on the one hand, demand that the committee change something in their activities, and on the other hand, yes, we have officially told them: we are looking for an alternative. Even if there will be two organizations in the future, even if the Red Cross International Committee will finally show its efficiency, two organizations are better than one,” Lubinets said.

The Ombudsman recalled that the Red Cross for 8 years was using the term “conflict” or “crisis in Ukraine” in its official war reports.

“I have raised this issue several times. Finally, with the arrival of the new president for the first time [a month ago], they used the right term – ‘russian-Ukrainian International Military Conflict’,” he emphasized that it was a significant progress.

In addition, Lubinets recalled that he initiated the issue of exclusion of russia from the Red Cross structures and is waiting for a response.

“I raised the issue with the leadership of the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent to exclude the russian National Committee of the Red Cross. The russians use illegally [and actually stole] the property of the National Committee of the Red Cross of Ukraine. It is directly prohibited by the principles of the International Federation of the Red Cross,” Ombudsman said.
