The russia is losing its ability to independently supply its own nuclear power industry with critical equipment and is becoming increasingly technologically dependent on China. This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine [FISU].
The russian state corporation Rosatom has purchased critical equipment for a nuclear power plant abroad for the first time. This refers to two turbine generator units for the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant, purchased from the Chinese company Dongfang Turbine.
The Foreign Intelligence Service notes that this step indicates the technological degradation of russian machine building and paves the way for the russian Federation’s deep dependence on China in a strategically sensitive area.
According to intelligence reports, Rosatom has already approached Chinese manufacturers with a request to transfer the technology for low-speed steam turbines needed for nuclear power plant reactors. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by 2030.
At the same time, the cost of russian turbines is more expensive than their Chinese counterparts, and russia’s own production capacities do not allow it to keep to the construction schedules for new power units at the Leningrad, Kursk, and Smolensk nuclear power plants.
The FISU emphasizes that the purchase of equipment and transfer of technology mean not only a failure in the development of the industry, but also the formation of long-term technological dependence on Beijing, which will cover the supply, service, and modernization of nuclear infrastructure.
