Intelligence assessments of the russian economy reveal the profound impact of Western sanctions. According to an analysis by the German Intelligence [BND], russia’s federal budget deficit has grown significantly – a shortfall the kremlin is attempting to conceal by falsifying official figures.
In the fifth year of the full-scale invasion, the Western sanctions are demonstrating a deep and sustained effect: nearly all sectors of the russian economy are now showing negative trends. Without comprehensive countermeasures, the structural weakness of russia’s energy-dependent economy is likely to become chronic.russia’s oil industry is not only burdened by the high taxes with which putin finances the war – it is also being eroded by drone strikes and sanctions, which are undermining the country’s most important source of foreign currency. This discrepancy reveals the true costs the kremlin is willing to bear for its war of aggression against Ukraine – costs that will have lasting effects for years to come.
As a result, the credibility of russia’s official statistics continues to erode, making the country an increasingly risky destination for investment. Against this backdrop, putin’s ambition to restore russia to its former greatness appears unlikely to succeed.
