Among 10 Ukrainian monuments and burial sites on Polish territory that have been subjected to at least 19 acts of vandalism since 2014, Poland has fully restored only one site, writes radiosvoboda, citing the Institute of National Remembrance.
“Consequences of the vandalism act have been fully removed in the village of Pikulichi, Gmina Przemysl, Przemysl District, Podkarpackie Voivodeship — an insulting inscription plate that unknown persons had affixed to the memorial gravestone of a brotherhood grave of the UPA [Ukrainska Povstanska Armiia / Ukrainian Insurgent Army – UT] fighters has been removed,” the statement says.
One of the most high-profile cases was the incident involving the desecration of a monument at the grave of UPA fighters on Monastyr Hill near the village of Verchrata. The granite cross installed there was splashed with paint, and the tombstone was smashed with a hammer, causing it to crack into several pieces.
List of sites that have been vandalized since 2014, the latest of which was damaged this year in February:
- Bielostok tract, Dolhobyczów Gmina, Hrubieszów County, Lublin Voivodeship. A monument at the grave of UPA soldiers who died in a battle with NKVD troops.
- Verbiczia village, Lubycza Królewska Gmina, Tomaszów County, Lublin Voivodeship. A memorial marker honoring Ukrainian victims of communist repressions and the residents of Verbaiczia who died in the ranks of the UPA.
- Verchrata village, Horyniec-Zdrój Gmina, Lubaczów County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A monument at the brotherhood grave of UPA fighters and local residents.
- Molodycz village, Wiązownica Gmina, Jarosław County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A monument to Ukrainians, residents of Molodycz, who died during World War II and in the postwar period.
- Monastyr Hill near Verchrata village, Lubaczów County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A monument at the grave of UPA fighters. Installed in accordance with procedure and the laws of the Republic of Poland.
- Radruż, Horyniec-Zdrój Gmina, Lubaczów County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A monument to UPA fighters and residents of Radruż who died in battles with NKVD troops.
- Hrušovychi village, Stubno Gmina, Jarosław County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A memorial marker for UPA fighters.
- Fredropol village, Fredropol Gmina, Przemysl County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A brotherhood grave of UPA fighters.
- Pikulichi village, Przemysl Gmina, Przemysl County, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A brotherhood grave of UPA fighters.
- Przemysl city, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. A commemorative plaque dedicated to the Ukrainian artist Olena Kulchytska, the Polish activist in the struggle for independence Wincenty Tarnawski, and the American psychoanalyst of Jewish origin Hélène Deutsch.
