NATO countries are avoiding rethinking their military doctrines while simply trying to re-equip their armies with modern weapons, which, however, is not enough to be truly prepared for the next war, the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and current Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, said in an interview with LB.ua.
“And this is a huge mistake by NATO. They believe that banal rearmament will be a magic wand for them that will help them out at any moment. And I say no. I say no, because new weapons entail new tactics of deployment, new forms and methods of deployment. New methods of deployment entail new structures in which they are used. And, as a result, the need for a new doctrine of deployment, and, as a result, the need for a new training system and new financing,” Zaluzhnyi said.According to him, for any NATO country today, it is a journey of about five years. Whoever is the first to come to this understanding, which will give them the opportunity to return to rearmament in the future, will be riding the wave, Zaluzhnyi believes.
“Today, NATO’s doctrine of deployment, doctrine of development, and doctrine of modernization do not at all align with the new technological processes already present on the battlefield,” Zaluzhnyi emphasized.
He noted that NATO remains the only reference point for Ukraine because it is the most powerful power bloc.
“But the Alliance needs rethinking, restructuring. And, most likely, if it were to be preserved, it would be necessary to discard all these political ambitions and think about security, and therefore about Ukraine. And then think about how to further develop this huge security organization,” Zaluzhnyi said.
