IOC declares full solidarity with Ukrainian athletes after Kharlan’s disqualification, does absolutely nothing to address situation

The International Olympic Committee said that it continues to stand in full solidarity with the Ukrainian athletes and the Olympic community of Ukraine, following Thursday’s disqualification of Ukraine’s Olha Kharlan at the World Fencing Championships.

We encourage international federations to handle situations involving Ukrainian and individual neutral athletes [russian and Belarussian] with the necessary degree of sensitivity, an IOC spokesperson told AFP, barrons.com reported.

Earlier, Olha Kharlan, a six-time world champion, was disqualified for not shaking the hand of her beaten russian opponent, who decided to disrupt the competition by spending about 50 minutes on the strip.
