According to data and reports from the World Bank, the damage to Ukrainian culture is EUR 4bn. These are only direct losses; indirect losses — what culture could have gained but did not, taking all factors into account — amount to USD 24bn, Tetyana Berezhna, Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, said in a statement.
“Since the start of the full‑scale invasion, the russians have damaged 1,913 cultural‑heritage sites and 2,573 cultural‑infrastructure facilities,” Berezna said.According to her, during a massed attack on Kyiv on the night of 15 June, an additional 13 cultural sites sustained damage. These included UNESCO World Heritage sites, monuments of national importance, cultural institutions, and art‑education institutions.
“russia attacks us every day and targets our culture because they are trying to erase our identity — to erase us as a nation. The destruction of culture is evidence of this,” she added.
