The latest reports that Starlink slowed down its services in Ukraine are deeply concerning, Thomas Regnier, Spokesperson for the European Commission on Digital Affairs and Defense, said in a statement.

“SpaceX must urgently restore full services for Ukraine because Ukraine needs this critical information to keep soldiers connected, to protect its citizens, but also to pilot the drones needed to defend its territory. The war in Ukraine has also shown how much Europe’s security depends on space, that Europe must do more, and that this is an urgent need,” Regnier said.

According to him, this is why the EU is actively working on the deployment and the development of IRIS² which will be a constellation of more than 300 satellites.

“It will provide the best secure satellite connectivity both for civilian and the military, and we will of course fully associate Ukraine to that.”
